The essential oil found in the leaves of the Bloodwood is a powerful antiseptic and is used all over the world for relieving coughs and colds, sore throats and other infections. It is used in the treatment of various skin complaints.
In fires, the spongy bark chars but does not stay alight for long. This protects the sapwood and cambium layers that the tree needs to stay alive.
The tree does not shed its bark each year like many smooth barked gums and the black char
can stay on the tree for decades.
