The Magenta Lillypilly grows along the coast of NSW and is found naturally from north of Jervis Bay to about Bulahdelah.
It grows in subtropical and littoral rainforests, as well as in sand dunes behind the beach.

There are extensive stands of it around the central coast of NSW, but it is considered threatened in the wild.

In its natural habitat it is a shrub to medium tree about 15 – 20 m tall.
​
The fruit is edible and has a sour apple-like flavour; it is eaten fresh or cooked into jams.
