Broad Leaved Paperbark Melaleuca quinquinervia
This Paperbark grows up to 20 m tall and its trunk is covered by a whitish and thick papery bark. The grey-green leaves are egg-shaped, and its flowers are cream or white. Bottlebrush-like flowers appear from late spring to autumn.

It grows in coastal eastern Australia, from Botany Bay in New South Wales northwards, into Queensland, and prefers to grow in swamps or on floodplains and near rivers. What is it going on here?Quinquenervia is from the Latin quinque meaning "five" and nervus, "vein“ and this refers to the five veins on the leaves.

Trees can live for over 100 years and if the leaves are burnt by a fire they can resprouts new ones from epicormic shoots on the trunk. This takes only a few weeks.
